From regulatory milestones to global conferences, the months ahead promise a variety of events. Below we'll delve into the important upcoming dates this year, expected to affect the corporate world:

January 2024
January 1: The “first reporting phase” of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in-scope companies must start reporting for the 2024 fiscal year, with the reports to be published in 2025.
January 1 : Under the EU Taxonomy, the non-financial entities report eligibility and alignment for the previous calendar year. Financial entities report Taxonomy eligibility and alignment for the previous calendar year.
January 9 – 10: 5th Meeting of the UNEP Working Group on Nitrogen
January 15-19: World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos
January 24 : The EU Sustainable Investment Summit, Brussels
January 23 – 25: Bern III Conference on Cooperation among the Biodiversity-related Conventions for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF)
February 2024
February 12 – 17: Fourteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS COP14)
February 27 – March 1: 6th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6)
February 12-14: GreenBiz 24 Annual event for sustainable business leaders in the US
February 20-21: Responsible Investment Forum in New York
March 2024
March: UN Global Compact Communication on Progress (UNGC CoP) submissions open
March 4-6: Economist Impact Sustainability Week in London

Q1 2024: Corporate Knights Global 100 most sustainable corporations rankings announced

April: Expected US SEC Climate Disclosure Regulation will issue requirements for companies to report on their greenhouse gas emissions and other climate matters
April 1: GRESB Real Estate Assessment opens
April (typically): Dow Jones Sustainability™ Index (S&P Global CSA) survey opens (two-month reporting window varies by company)
April (typically): CDP portal opens
April 21 – 30: 4th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4)
May 2024
May 28 – 30: Nairobi Convention COP 11
June 2024
Deadline for adoption of sector-specific European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) for reporting under the CSRD. However, the European Commission included in its 2024 Work Program proposal to postpone the deadline for the sector-specific ESRS to allow stakeholders time to adapt to new requirements.
June 30: Deadline for Financial Markets Players to submit second report under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation. From this point onward FMPs must include year-on-year comparisons in reports.
June: FTSE4Good Index Series semi-annual review
June 3 – 5: 2nd Global meeting of the Montevideo National Focal Points
June 17 – 12: 3rd session of the Ad Hoc Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) on a Science-Policy Panel to further the sound management of chemicals and waste and to prevent pollution
July 2024
July 1: GRESB Real Estate Assessment closes
July 6: Deadline for EU Member states and European Economic Area Countries to transpose the CSRD in their national legislation.
July (typically): CDP portal closes
July (typically): United Nations Global Compact Communication on Progress (UNGC CoP) submissions close
July (typically): Ethisphere® World’s Most Ethical Companies opens
September 2024
September 24: High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

November 4 – 5: 4th Global High-Level Ministerial Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
November 25 – December 1: 5th session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment
Plastic Pollution Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) convenes in Busan, Republic of Korea, as part of UNEA-5.2's resolution for a legally binding instrument on plastic pollution. With a comprehensive approach covering the plastic life cycle, the aim is to complete the work by the end of 2024.
December 2024
December: By the end of 2024, the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) is expected to be approved.
December: Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) expected to apply. The EU’s new rules on deforestation-free products guarantee that the products placed on the EU market or exported from it do not originate from deforested land or have not contributed to forest degradation.
December: By the end of the year U.S. Federal Trade Commission's updated Green Guides
are expected to update the definition of “greenwashing” for business and marketing in the US.
December: FTSE4Good Index Series semi-annual review
